How I Started Journaling and Became Addicted to It as a Millennial Man

Don’t know what to journal as a man... or woman?
Well, this quick article is for you. We will get you to journal right away. Like now!

Because we live in a sea of information deeper than Elon’s pockets!

You want to journal.
Build a habit of journaling?

Great.

Now what the hell do you actually write?
“Write your thoughts.”

Okay. What thoughts?

X says this.
Y says no, do this.
Z says absolutely not — do THIS.

And now you’re more confused than a goat on AstroTurf.

So… what’s the actual point of journaling?

  • Thoughts.
  • Confessions.
  • Ideas.
  • Habits.
  • Word vomit.
  • Whatever the latest buzzword is.

But honestly?

I think the biggest thing is just consistency.

You write. You do it again.

And eventually… it becomes a habit.

This journaling habit gives you something we don't get much of these days:

A bloody minute.

A minute away from the endless buzzing, pinging, notification-filled world permanently stuck in your hand.

Look here. Look here. Rant over.

Because you know what journaling actually gives you?

Clarity. Yep. Clarity.

This brings mindfulness into our lives.

I’m going to cut to the chase and give you something you can actually do for one of your first journal entries.

No 47-minute YouTube tutorial.

No complicated journaling system.

No “wake up at 4:37am and write exactly 17 things before consuming sunlight.”

Just this.

About ten years ago, on a completely random Wednesday afternoon at work, I came across a video talking about writing down three things you’re grateful for.

Cliché… I know.

But I thought, screw it. I’ll give it a go.

And honestly? It felt forced. Uncomfortable. Kinda stupid.
And that’s okay.

Because you know what? You just have to start.

So here’s your task.

  1. Get a notebook / diary / book.
  2. Get a pen.
  3. Get a “let’s start now” attitude.

Stop reading and get it now!

I’m going to get you to do it with me. Come on.

Don’t make me do this by myself. Alright.

Let’s write:

  • The date.
  • Number one.
  • Number two.
  • Number three.

Now I’m going to write or jot down…

  • Number one: I love my dog Bond and the walk we had this morning.
  • Number two: Stoked I caught up with my mates over the weekend.
  • Number three: Going on a road trip with my girlfriend.

And… Now do your three!

That’s it. You’ve started. Welcome to gratitude journaling. I'm not going to give you more techniques. This is enough for now!

Honestly, get started with the above only!

And that’s the important bit.

Because once you start, you might find you actually want to write more. That's where you can do prompts, affirmations, goal setting and gratitude journaling.

Journaling helps so much with your thoughts and feelings. Seriously, it is a moment of my day I really get to enjoy!

And just like that…

Welcome to the start of journaling for men.

I hope you enjoy the journey. Keep a journal side. I believe you.

And look, I know staring at a completely blank page can be a little intimidating.

If you’re thinking, “Yeah, nah. I just want someone to tell me what the hell I’m supposed to write…”

Fair enough.

That’s exactly why we made a guided journal called The Grounded Man. It's a journal for men with structured way to write about anything and have prompts to help provide clarity and direction.

It gives you somewhere to start, without that terrifying blank white page staring back at you like a toddler in a grocery store.

It’s in the link below if you’re interested.

But for now…

Get writing.

You’ve got this.
